The Human Rights Commission
Act, 2000, confers a wide ranging competence on the Commission to
promote and protect human rights as defined both in the Constitution
and in international agreements
to which Ireland is a party.
Section 2 of the Human Rights Commission Act, 2000, contains a definition
of the human rights which the Commission is mandated to protect
and promote.
The definition is:
(a) The rights, liberties and freedoms conferred on, or guaranteed
to, persons by the Constitution, and
(b) the rights, liberties or freedoms conferred on, or guaranteed
to persons by any agreement, treaty or convention to which the State
is a party”.
